It's been a while

It has been far too long since my last post. There has been a ton of changes and a hectic schedule between my last post and now, but I'm happy to say its been energy well spent. I have relocated and moved into a new studio which is awesome and I have been spending a lot of time in that new studio preparing for my largest show to date which is rapidly approaching. I have a little over two months before my two person show at Thinkspace Gallery this December and I wish I could share more of the work with you, but for now it has to stay pretty hush hush so I have included a teaser shot of one of the paintings that will be on display this December. Other than that I have been inspired by a lot of great music, some of which I have posted videos for below, I hope you enjoy them. I will be posting more info and such as the show grows nearer and now that I am more settled I hope to be posting and updating much more. Hope all is well!

Really really digging the newish Foals album. I really enjoyed their previous effort but the growth in this album has made it one delicious piece o' ear candy! This song is on repeat!

A blast from the past is this track from The Fall of Troy. They broke up last year, fortunately I was able to see them live a few times before they split. I hadn't heard this track in what seemed like ages but I heard it a few weeks back and now its a regular play again. The ending gets me every time!

A proper post is long overdue and I do intend to make one, hopefully later tonight I can do a process post on my latest work. But lately I've been working non stop it seems clocking in 14-16 hours a day on the regular and I feel pretty much zombie exhausted constantly so I wanted to make a music post dedicated to those jams that have been keeping me motivated to keep going...so thanks you lovely heavy jam jams...where would I be without you?!?!?

Last Saturday I took part in Thinkspace Gallery's 5 Year Anniversary Show, and in a word it was incredible! wow, its been a hot minute since i have posted anything and i apologize. I have been ridiculously, insanely busy the past few weeks and i wish i could say its all been going into my artwork, but that's just not the way the cookie has crumbled and my day job has been keeping me very very occupied. but never fear i still have been as busy as humanly possible in the studio, currently I'm working on making some new pieces for some upcoming shows i have later this year. Like always I'm really trying to push myself with these new works and i have def. been out of my comfort zone lately. And while that is always a good thing and a sign of growth it also means that i have been riding that emotional roller coaster. But all in all i have high hopes and think that all this struggle and frustration will pay off, so wish me luck and if you could keep your fingers crossed for me i would be ever so grateful!! here is a quick close up pic of one I'm working on now, its nowhere near finished so hopefully you can bare with me!!

* P.S. I have been so inspired by these two fantastic records! The first is off the amazing new Arcade Fire album titled "Suburbs" here is one of my fav. tracks off the record.

and the second is off probably the best heavy record i have heard this year, its the flawless and utterly brilliant record "Option Paralysis" by The Dillinger Escape Plan. Enjoy!

And every time I watch this teaser video for their new album "Meridional" I have a smile that is firmly plastered across my silly face! Nice to know that even after all these years the almighty Norma Jean still brings the heat!

Here are a few detail shots of some new works/experiments in progress. I have really been enjoying the time I have to create lately. And don't get me wrong, I am always very grateful and appreciative for any time I am able to paint because I love painting to pieces, its without a doubt the peanut butter to my jelly but sometimes painting will have me so frustrated and tied in knots that I need to force myself to sit and push through a work session, but not recently. Sure there are always gonna be the bumps in the road, and the minor struggles, but for the most part I cant wait to come home, put my headphones on, pour a delicious cup of coffee, tune the world out and delve right in!

I got to see The National, one of my favorite bands of all time, play last night at The Wiltern In Los Angeles. It was the opening night of their U.S. tour in support of their fantastic new record "High Violet". I have been a fan of the band for a few years now and last night was my first time seeing them live, and in short I must say it was DEFINITELY worth the wait. Last Sunday I had a long time dream come true. I have always wanted to be able to photograph my own models to use as reference for the figures in my work, but for a variety of reasons (lack of money, contacts, confidence, etc..) I never allowed the seemingly lofty dream to materialize. So I would spend countless hours hunting through magazines, books, websites looking for just the right reference to use. And because I am so picky about the references I use in my work (and continue to get pickier and pickier as time goes on) this process was becoming more and more difficult to make work. So after years of dreaming and being told that I should just suck it up and shoot my own references, I finally took the leap and set up my first photo shoot, albeit with a lot of help from some really incredible people. The proverbial ball got rolling with a simple meeting of a one Jeremy Kaplan, who I met at my "Windows & Mirrors" opening last September at Thinkspace Gallery. I was talking with Jeremy about my work and telling him about how I would like to someday be able to shoot my own references and he told me about a photographer friend of his, a Myles Pettengill (for more info on Myles and his work go to www.mylespettengill.com) that I should get in contact with. Coincidentally that same night I met a model named Stephanie Shaw who expressed interest in working with me in the future for such a project. And at the time I was really glad to be making these contacts, but I still lacked that push that I needed to make it all come together. Well six months later it was becoming very clear to me that if i was to grow my work and progress the way I envisioned I would need to push out of that comfort zone and face my fears, so after a month or so of emailing and figuring out schedules and such the shoot came together, and I couldn't be happier with the results. From the start everything just gelled, Myles and I were really on the same page with how things should go and we were both really open and excited about each others ideas for the shoot and when we started snapping pictures the results just flowed so effortlessly, thanks in no small part to his keen eye and experience. He was very comfortable with directing, and throwing out ideas and he just knew how to get the shot that I wanted but couldn't always verbalize. But in this case it took three to tango, and Stephanie was the perfect fit for this shoot, she was SO supportive and so excited to do the project and her enthusiasm never wavered even over the course of the near six hour shoot. She was really receptive to all the ideas we were throwing out, but also knew how to take things into her own hands by offering up some really incredible and unique poses, costumes and jaw dropping make-up work. I also really loved that both Myles and Stephanie could sense that I was nervous about the shoot, and they did everything in their power to help me get the shots I wanted and make me feel as comfortable as possible. By the nights end, I was blown away with how amazing everything had turned out and by the kind of shots we were able to get. So many times during the shoot all Myles and I could mumble was "gaaaaawwwwwddddd, that looks gorgeous." A big lesson was to be learned from all of this, and its one of those that you say to yourself "I've heard this a million times from a million people in a million different ways" but i learned (at the risk of being completely cheesy) anything is possible, and more times than not its you that stands in the way of accomplishing your goals and nothing else. For the longest time I made excuses as to why I couldn't take this step, and thats why it never happened, I was focusing on why I couldn't do it. Cant help but smile when I think of all the others things I can accomplish with the proper mindset. I want to send a huge thank you again to Jeremy Kaplan, Myles Pettengill, Stephanie Shaw, Ashley Thorp, Rebekka Utermohlen and Christopher Polentz for all their wonderful help and encouraging words. Here are a few shots that I took during and in between sessions, and in the future I'll post some of the photos from the shoot.

Tran Nguyen "Nurturing The Uneased Soul"

I had the pleasure of seeing Tran Nguyen's opening at Thinkspace Gallery a bit back and was completely blown away. Tran's work is a gorgeous combination of figurative and surreal elements that are carefully rendered with brush and color pencil, and the results are just staggering. To say that I was "very inspired" while viewing the show would be a massive understatement, Tran's dedication and commitment to her craft is undeniable, and so easy to see with this body of work. But, even more impressive than the work was how humble and down to earth the person creating it is. With as much talent as she has, one might assume she would have some kind "better than thou" complex or an elephant sized ego, but nothing could be further from the truth. If you have the chance I highly recommend seeing the show in person before it closes, you wont be disappointed!

"Give Me Space To Think" Group Show

It seems yet again I have neglected this blog for far too long. Its never done intentionally, and I always feel bad for letting it go this long. So to start, I finished "Act 5: There Are Ghosts In These Words (And We Love To Watch The Ghosts Dance)" and thiece is being shown this month in a show curated by Sour Harvest/Thinkspace Gallery titled "Give Me Space To Think". Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Auction

I recently had the honor of being invited to show at the Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Auction! This year, 2009, Juxtapoz is celebrating their 15th Anniversary. To help celebrate, Juxtapoz decided to put together a huge group show and have teamed up with Powerhouse Project in Detroit to help raise money to buy homes in abandoned neighborhoods in order to regenerate one of the symbols of American middle class cities.

Like the ships built in bottled sand,

Passion assembled promise (piece by piece) in fragile neon tubes,

A promise of more than (or were it greater than?) the sum of its amateur hands,

Tracing careful lines to attract the open eye wide,

I attached skin to color, to expose a liar working for honesty,

I connected power lines to sleepless nights, to illuminate the anatomy of distraction,

Than I built a glowing human sign (so I could sleep next to a glowing human), that reads "Look what I've built, it tries so beautifully".

I recently had my show entitled "Windows & Mirrors" with Thinkspace gallery and it was more than I could have ever hoped for!! I want to thank everyone for coming out and making this night nothing short of a dream come true! Im going to be sure to post some pics of the show soon!

I also did a live painting at the Beyond Eden Art Festival recently which I'll also post pics of soon, had a great time and would love to thank the lovely and supportive Thinkspace Gallery for allowing me to take part in such an amazing event!

I've also been working really hard on my newest painting titled Act 4: Like Exploding (Accepting) Neon (Dreams) which will be going to Aqua Miami for Art Basel this December (more info to come) I will also be posting some pics of the piece in the near future with a full photo process and the final work once its done!

Act 3: A Solution In Vivid Color

Lend me your skin and i'll mock you in delicate shades of white,

And in the sugar rush that will follow as we assume and I devour,

The full understanding that loved and empty agreement,

That flammable mixture of senses,

That taste of bitter, ginger fingers, candy apple thighs, cherry bone marrow,

All beautifully served with mixed signals and finished with encouraging words,

As we assume and I devour,

That sweetly sickening toxic risk,

That bore connected letters,

Which grew into words,

That died as complete sentences when pushed through straight teeth by lonely lungs,

(The friction!) that created a small spark right in the heart of the great candy rooted forest,

Friction than presented the problem and the solution...

The spark/ the fire/ that great forest at night that now burns for all to see in vivid color.

As dark welcomes light and the air readies itself for the sun,

you'll think about those times,

times spent lost in that vast desert of variables,

walking knee deep in the sand with colossal expectations,

honestly attempting to perform magic tricks with lying hands,

desperately searching for the calming oasis found between lying eyes...

Your occupied hands welcome an eye like a half hearted smile welcomes a coward, and you know this burden of weighted thoughts will gladly accept your misgivings as an invitation to dine...

Yes, you will think about those times,

for the last time,

and than you will never look back,

you can never look back...

Instead, you will close your eyes and feel loving feathers and exhausted breath carry you to an endless sky,

you will be sewn together weightless and be reconstructed to glow between vast and influenced rainbows that look down upon the weight and the sand,

and when your eyes reopen they will glimmer and shine of new perspective,

they will shine of feathers and simplicity,

and they will reflect nothing of where you have been.

Here is a more in depth photo process of how my work comes together. As I said before, my paintings are built in layers using a wash technique. In the photos you can see how the layering works, basically I'll build up a layer (in this case I built the face with unbleached titanium) and than wash it down with yellows, reds, pinks, purples etc. and build it back up hoping to make the work smoother and correctly toned. I also show a picture of my patterns/veils design, which I first drew on a piece of tracing paper that I placed over the portrait and than used as a reference when I actually painted the patterns/veils in acrylic. This process actually took much longer than I had planned on, I went through many, many drafts of the patterns/veils before I created the one that I wanted to go ahead and paint.

This is what we do, and my how we make a mess of things,
Confusing and posing with half ass gestures and crooked smiles
We will take it all,
All the shine and glimmer from your trusting, open face (Yes, even that tiny sparkle in your eye) will be ours,
But don't worry! They will be put to good use I assure you,
Oh they most certainly will!
They will be wrapped and folded ever so carefully into delicate ribbons that will adorn our faces,
A victory mask of sorts,
Masks like you could never imagine,
Oh it will be marvelous!

We will shine like pink dreams,
And we will get away with it.

between our soft skin simple questions turn white to grey,

I've been wanting to show a brief process of how my works come together. My paintings are built in layers using a modified 'wash' technique on the portraits that is similar to the technique used by the masters, but as previously stated is slightly modified for use with acrylic paint. The purpose of the wash is to reduce the appearance of the brushstroke and/or a way to add a desired color to the area being washed. Im working on an entire stage by stage process write up for the piece I am currently working on and will post when finished, but this is a brief example of just a few of the stages the paintings go through.

Thinkspace Presents: Culver City Invasion!

Yesterday I took part in the Culver City Art Walk. Thinkspace Gallery came up with an amazing way to get in on the action by renting out a building right in the heart of the artwalk and curating a "pop up" show they called the "Culver City Art Invasion". The show featured a good portion of the galleries amazing featured artists including Amy Sol, Anthony Clarkson and Brandi Milne, live painting, spoken word and was headlined by the awe inspiring artist Ekundayo. I was so honored to be able to take part in this amazing event which featured not only incredible art but incredible people as well, and I send a very warm thank you to all involved in making it happen.

This is the third piece in my new series. really feel as though im being pushed conceptually as well as technically with this new body of work. The poem for the work is below. A big thanks to my friend and mentor Ash Thorp for all of his help, and to Chris Polentz, Reddiva and Vikingjoe for their wonderful words and insight.

"deception wears its veil"

So I ask where are you going child?
with that mouth that lies about your heart,
that cowardice heart that speaks through veil covered eyes in nine letter truths,
but marks return to sender on my perfect gift,
child I know your heart, because it is mine,
and I know your waiting with your trigger finger wrapped in crossword puzzle deliverance to live for the winner of pro versus con,
plastic ornament versus healer,
but you may end before the battle is won,
and your watching from the middle of the road,
in the middle of nowhere,
when you cant afford to be lost.

This is the second piece in my new series. Really excited about the where the work is going. I feel like I am really being challenged by these new works and by the moments that inspire them. The poem for this work is below.

"O' intimacy and the aftermath"

dancing through obnoxious screens of color,
we happily dismiss the weight of our actions,
first instincts may be best,
but don't remind us quite yet,
instead enjoy the hypnotic, organic shadows of our journey to find that the answers we seek are perfect only in their complexity,
and too soon our childish dance will attract the fury of consequence,
and when it speaks,
it wont whisper
